Alonso has been out of F1 since he left McLaren at the end of 2018 but is still regarded as a hugely talented driver who commands attention across the globe. The Spaniard has agreed a two-year contract for his third stint with the French team.
Human babies are unique in the animal kingdom in the extent of their underdevelopment at birth. But the physical underdevelopment is only a tiny part of it. The human brain is only partially formed when you are born. The earliest experiences of the human baby have a lifelong impact on their mental and emotional health.
Pips can determine their own fate. They accept self referrals from sometimes desperate parents, from health visitors and midwives who are key to identifying problems early, and also from social workers who deal with the most difficult and unhappy cases. They negotiate contracts to take referrals from different organisations, from the county council to the GP commissioners to children’s centres.
One cannot contemplate Brasília’s crown-like cathedral, for example, without being thrilled both by its formal dynamism and its structural economy, which combine to engender a sense almost of weightlessness from within, as the enclosure appears to dissolve entirely into glass. And what architect can resist trying to work out how the tapering, bone-like concrete columns of the Alvorada Palace are able to touch the ground so lightly. Brasília is not simply designed, it is choreographed: each of its fluidly composed pieces seems to stand, like a dancer, on points frozen in a moment of absolute balance. But what I most enjoy in his work is that even the individual building is very much about the public promenade, the public dimension.
The challenge is to build a stronger and happier society. What we do to intervene between conception and age two is all about building the emotional capacity of an infant. What we do after the age of two is mostly to undo damage done previously.
What is clear to all those involved in supporting the earliest relationships is that the awareness of the critical period from conception to age two is not widely understood in our NHS and public services. Training provision for professionals is not yet good enough.

Taking Pips nationwideEarlier this year, I hosted jointly with the University of Northampton a major conference on Pips. I was delighted to announce that we will be establishing a new charitable foundation, Parent Infant Partnership UK – Pip UK for short – which will provide co-funding and practical support to those local authority areas that wish to establish their own early-years service.
During our meeting last year, we spoke at length about his work – and teclado mecanico tfue he offered some valuable lessons for my own. It seems absurd to describe a 104-year-old as youthful, but his energy and creativity were an inspiration. I was touched by his warmth and his great passion for life and for scientific discovery – he wanted to know about the cosmos and the world in which we live. Add the stock, oregano, bouquet garni and cinnamon, and season. If the liquid does not just cover the meat, top up with water. Bring to a boil, lower the heat and simmer very gently, part-covered, for three hours, stirring from time to time and topping up with a splash of water if it looks dry. It ought to be natural to form that secure bond. But post-natal depression, problems with conception or the birth experience, domestic violence and issues of poverty can all get in the way. And one of the biggest obstacles to forming that secure bond is when Mum didn’t have a secure relationship with her own mother. This truly is a cycle of deprivation that is passed down through generations.
In the two enclosures nude sunbathing has always been allowed, but a little while ago an over-zealous head keeper demanded that bodies be decently attired, even when exposed. The regulars kept a costume handy, ready to whip on whenever he appeared. Feeling ran so high for a while that one Sunday a demonstration against clothed sunbathing was staged, and anyone passing would have seen a succession of fully dressed protesters diving in off the top board.
