Whole families rarely disappear without a trace in Central Europe. It didn’t happen again until 2017. This time it was a couple of parents and two children. The Troadecs from Orvault near the French city of Nantes went missing for three weeks. France also experienced a nervous drama during this period: the victims’ personal belongings were repeatedly found, from health insurance cards to blood-smeared cell phones, all of which were spread over hundreds of kilometers in places. Then Pascal Troadec, the brother-in-law of the missing family father, confessed the deed. His motive: an inheritance dispute. It was about gold bars.

Oil stains on the road are every driver’s nightmare. Especially when they are deliberately created to kill. A motorcyclist died in 2011. The police are still looking for the person responsible.

A small car is on the 2013 state road between Markt Rettenbach and Ottobeuren. It is badly damaged on the front. A few meters away a black and red motorcycle lies across the road. A serious accident, as documented by the police.

The 37-year-old motorcyclist, a father of two, was unable to hold his bike in a curve. She skidded on a slippery spot and lost contact with the road. The centrifugal force threw the man into the opposite lane – and into the car of a 60-year-old driver. She can get out easily injured. The 37-year-old biker, on the other hand, did not stand a chance on impact. Joseph "Sepp" Deniffel is dead.

The perpetrator wanted to hurt

It was April 17th, 2011, a beautiful Sunday in the Unterallgäu. The motorcycle season was a few days old. Motorcyclists sometimes get reckless. But neither the driver nor the younger biker made any driving errors. They weren’t drunk or stoned. Their vehicles were technically perfect. Instead, on Palm Sunday 2011, Josef Deniffel fell victim to a crime.

Aside from the classic frenzy, is there a crime scene street? Not that rare. Stones and concrete slabs are thrown from motorway bridges. Manhole covers are deliberately placed in the middle of the roadway. There was a trucker and sniper who allegedly targeted other trucks around 700 times between 2008 and 2013. He has been charged with more than 100 such attacks, once he seriously injured a woman before the Federal Criminal Police Office could convict him with a comparison of license plates from the truck toll collection.

Over time, the courts judge such incidents tougher and tougher: What used to be passed as negligent homicide is now often attempted murder. The trucker and sniper in question Michael Harry K. was sentenced to more than ten years in prison.

Series of assassinations

In the Allgäu in April 2011, Hans-Klaus von Keutz from nearby Trunkelsberg was the first witness at the scene of the accident, like him "Augsburger Allgemeine" later reported: Von Keutz was therefore an experienced motorcyclist himself and immediately noticed that there was a huge puddle of oil on the pavement. The pool of used oil was not the only indication of outside influence in the fatal accident in Markt Rettenbach.

Broken pieces lay around, remains of wine and champagne bottles with screw caps. And not just here. In other places, the investigators registered nine more throws of bottles full of oil that day.

They quickly realized that the last few hours could be the deadly climax of a notorious, brutal series of crimes. It has occupied the people here since 2007, and was later the subject of a contribution by "mirror TV". On October 30, 2007, the scene of the crime is for the first time a motorway, the A92 near Freising. Twelve large oil stains are spread over more than 1.5 kilometers of the motorway. Drivers can just avoid them. There were no accidents, but it dawned on the police: something like this can turn out far worse.

In December 2009, a witness reported that he saw five bottles being thrown from a vehicle with a trailer near Binswangen at night – the next oil films appeared six months later. The setting: as in 2007, the Biberach district. These are only excerpts from the acts in question.

Is there a perpetrator at work here? Or are there several? Are copycats involved? And if not, if there is really only one thing: what drives him to murderous activities?

The perpetrator was careless

Murder. Dangerous interference with road traffic. From now on, this is also above the preliminary investigation that the public prosecutor’s office in Memmingen is promoting. The processing officers form the 14-member "Investigation group oil stain". Destroyed bottles become evidence for them. It turns out that this was where bulk goods were thrown. Wine bottles from Aldi, for example.

In order to cover up the exact origin, the perpetrator carefully scraped off all the labels. Only at the top, when screwing the locks on, was he probably negligent. The investigators unanimously discover a genetic trace on the broken pieces and under the screw connections "mirror TV" documented. This DNA becomes the fingerprint of the oil stain killer being sought.

DNA tests are only successful if the perpetrator in question has already become suspicious. When it is immortalized with its genetic code in the huge file of the Federal Criminal Police Office, which has existed since 1998 and which at the time of the crime in 2011 contained around one million traces.

Police have no successes

In Germany, for example, the murderer of the Munich fashion designer Rudolph Moshammer was convicted. But this time, with the oil stain perpetrator, the investigators missed the hit they longed for. There is no suitable co-entry – not even when 1,400 men from the region were visited at home with huge effort and given saliva samples. None of them refuse. And therefore none of them had anything to do with the act.

Today, in 2019, the 2013 State Highway murder was eight years ago. They did not get much further in the responsible Kemptner police headquarters. This is often a problem for investigators when there is no direct relationship between perpetrator and victim. "Occasional hints are still received, which are also followed up", said police chief inspector Johanna Graf to t-online.de, "however, there is currently no concrete personal suspicion."

In doing so, the profilers have to work in the technical language "Operational case analysis specialists" mean, quite a concrete idea of what is sought and its motive: It is therefore a man "who proceeds in a controlled manner and only has a limited social environment, who lives solitary and withdrawn", says Johanna Graf. Above all, it is someone who wants to enhance his or her self-esteem by exercising power and therefore creates fear and insecurity. Here, too, the experts agree; the profiler entrusted with the case, Markus Hoga, made this statement "Mirror online".

Copycat offenders were caught

But a motorcycle hater? Someone who has been forced to use violence after a conflict in traffic? A "Insane", as a firefighter after the attempted attack on the A92 motorway near Freising "mirror TV" conjectured? Not all of the initial theses survived the long, intensive police work.

Maybe imitators really appeared. In 2014, far to the west on country roads in the Eifel, a 26-year-old laid four traces of hydraulic oil like that "Aachen news" wrote. A motorcyclist slipped away and was seriously injured. The perpetrator, according to the expert opinion of "Delusions and persecution ideas" coined, confessed his guilt before the jury and was taken to a closed clinic.

And the year before, on a busy road near Dießen am Ammersee and thus closer to the Allgäu, someone threw off bottles with vegetable oils. But the circumstances are different. "According to the current state of the investigation, this incident is not assigned to the unknown perpetrator sought"According to the Kempten Presidium. The only hope there is to find the culprit in the event of the death of Josef Deniffel. Because in murder, Johanna Graf finds out, "there is no limitation period".

One tree dead among hundreds every year – hardly anyone responsible in the law enforcement authorities will question such deaths more closely. Examinations then take place briefly, autopsies not at all. Such is the law in Germany. The next day the public prosecutor on duty closed the Bozkurt file. Paper has been gathering dust on a shelf for almost twenty years.
