As a number of you may know I’m not only a big fan of gaming on original systems but also want to dabble in the dark art of emulation. Yes, I know many purists will be hitting the back button at disgust — however I am of the view that emulation has a place in each retro player’s lifetime. Emulation enables you to experience games in near pixel-perfection you could not ever be able to manage or find and out of a historical standpoint it is a great way to archive and catalogue titles which would otherwise evaporate.

My selection of emulation instrument is a self-modded first (some call it’classic’ now) Microsoft XBox. I have been asked on many occasions on how to mod an XBox and everything a modded XBox is, so within this collection of posts I will show you the capabilities of my two units and explain to you the way to go about getting your ownpersonal.Read about original xbox iso roms At website

I opted to use this specific hardware after stumbling across sites run by enthusiasts and finding exactly how large the XBox mod scene still is and also what a capable machine they’re for emulation purposes. Almost every emulator ever created has been ported to XBox and in the majority of cases has been enhanced still further by fans with the addition of video collections and artwork. Obviously it is possible to use an XBox as a excellent networked Media Centre and it does many more things besides but as this is RGC I’ll concentrate on the topic of retro console and computer emulation.

1. The XBox is relatively simple to unleash your self (soft-modding a Normal 8gb XBox takes moments when You know the way to have the tools/software)
2. The device fits beneath your telly, including a PC
3. A timeless XBox is affordable, I found them being marketed with a control for #14.99 lately at my local GameStation. EBay is another good source of cheap XBoxes. Unlike an Xbox 360, the first Xbox is very reliable — almost bombproof. The programmer scene is still going strong and fresh variations of popular emulators are released weekly

A modded XBox also has the following benefits:

1. Region free games and DVD
2. Capability to run in HD (720p and even 1080p)
3. You can update your HDD into something larger
4. You can save your DVD films and games to your HDD and play from there (faster loading times)
5. Ability to work with a mouse and keyboard (good for all those point and click adventure games )
6. Tremendous development scene resulting in hundreds of ported emulators and utilities
7. Fully networkable over LAN with any other devices you have
8. Great alternative to your PC at a home arcade cabinet setup
9. Once the HDD is upgraded they create decent Network Media Centres (XBMC)
